Pronounced: noh-sih-SEP-shun

Wellness glossary · Anatomy & Movement

Anatomy & Movement · definition

The nervous system process of detecting potentially harmful mechanical, thermal, or chemical stimuli.

How the term is used

Nociception contributes to pain signaling, but nociception and the conscious experience of pain are not identical concepts.

Why it matters

It helps prevent oversimplified statements that pain is merely a tissue signal or merely psychological.
